"When August Rosenbaum released his debut album Beholder at the tender age of 22, it was clear that a star of Danish jazz was in the making. Original, conceptual and challenging, Beholder left the mind spinning and clearly demonstrated the extent of the young man’s talent.
Now 24, Rosenbaum is ready with something quite different. Teaming up with childhood musical friends, Jesper Thorn and Rasmus Lund as the August Rosenbaum Trio, their first live LP together reveals a more subdued and tender musical repertoire.
Hidden within the eight live recordings are narratives that can only be told through jazz – playful encounters, bittersweet recollections and the haunting sense of loss. Introspective, melancholy and meditative, it’s held together with a tension manufactured through the deft interplay of the piano, bass and drums, each of which don’t work to outshine the other.
The temper is Scandinavian, neither too rushed nor bold or flashy. Clear, confident and incisive, the music is determined though often it is unresolved – the listener becoming instilled with a scenario that they them self must settle. So while it is sentimental, it is not mawkish, and the music does not always culminate in a happy ending.
And while at times it may rage, for the most part it’s calm, utilising silence to create space and room to think. The themes are simple and the progressions subtle for it is not an album showcasing technical virtuosity, rather it is a contemplative work examining the quieter sides of the human condition.
With this album, the August Rosenbaum Trio have created a rich investigation of emotion. It is intuitive, emphatic and existential – a work of jazz that swells with soul, heartbreak, and above all, hope."
